Optimizing Your SkyCaddie GPS Signal

Q: My SkyCaddie is having signal problems:
Answer: The Global Positioning System (GPS) should always be available to you. In order to obtain optimal signal strength, please check the following:
  1. Make sure your SkyCaddie has the latest software updates. To update the software, connect the SkyCaddie to your PC, turn it ON, and double click the SkyCaddie Desktop Icon to start the “DirectConnect” process. The website will update your SkyCaddie as necessary.
  2. Unlike a cell phone, the SkyCaddie must be outdoors and the antenna must have an unobstructed view of the sky. (Our temporary cart mount was specially designed to work with all carts and places your SkyCaddie in an optimal position).
  3. While at the course make sure that you provide the SkyCaddie with about 10 minutes to warm-up and acquire satellites. Place the unit in an open area away from buildings, tall trees. We suggest that if you hit range balls or practice putting before your round, place or clip the unit on top of your golf bag. From this elevated spot, the unit will receive signal from multiple satellites.
  4. Make sure that if you are wearing the SkyCaddie on your belt, you’re not blocking the antenna from receiving signal. By wearing the unit on your belt at start up, you can block out the signal from the satellites to the receiver.
  5. If you see the "SEARCHING" (SG3 and SG4) or “SEARCH FOR SATS” (SG1 and SG2) message flashing on your screen, the SkyCaddie is searching for signals from satellites. If it continues to display this message, be sure you have a clear view of the sky.
  6. Once it starts detecting satellite signals, the searching messages will be replaced by a signal indicator on the left (SG1 and SG2) or at the top of the screen (SG3 and SG4). It could take up to 5-10 minutes to compute its initial location once it begins receiving satellite signals.
  7. Once the unit has acquired signal and is using SBAS (Indicated by BOLD signal bars) you can place the unit on your belt and begin play.
If you continue to have problems acquiring satellites, please see "Resetting the GPS".

Answer: If you continue to have problems acquiring satellites, try resetting the GPS on your SkyCaddie. This can be done using the following procedure:

SG1 and SG2:

  1. Turn on your SkyCaddie and open any course for play.
  2. Press the "Menu" button
  3. Scroll to and select "Advanced"
  4. Select "Yes" to "Use Advanced Menu"
  5. Scroll to and select "GPS"
  6. Scroll to and select "Reset GPS"
  7. Select "Rset" to reset the satellite search.
  8. Finally, take your SkyCaddie outside and let it search for satellites. Since it was reset, it may take up to 15-20 minutes.
SG3 and SG4:
  1. Turn on your SkyCaddie and open any course for play.
  2. Press the "Menu" button
  3. Scroll to and select "Advanced"
  4. Select "Yes" to "Use Advanced Menu"
  5. Scroll to and select "GPS"
  6. Scroll to and select "Reset"
  7. Select "Reset" to reset the satellite search.
  8. Finally, take your SkyCaddie outside and let it search for satellites. Since it was reset, it may take up to 15-20 minutes.

Answer: To switch between yards, meters, and miles on your SkyCaddie:

  1. Turn on your SkyCaddie.
  2. Select any course and press "Play".
  3. Press the "Menu" button
  4. Using the thumb pad, scroll to and select "Preferences".
  5. Select "Yards/Meters"
  6. Press the Soft Key corresponding to your desired selection.
Q: Why are my yardages reading all 9’s?

Answer: "9999 or 999" is the maximum distance value your SkyCaddie attempts to display. There are a few reasons you may be seeing this value.

  1. Please make sure that the correct SkyCourse has been selected on your SkyCaddie. Selecting the wrong course will cause the SkyCaddie to measure distance from your current location to a different course much farther away (switching the distance type to "Miles" will show you how many miles you are, in this case).
  2. You may have your SkyCaddie distance information setup incorrectly. To change the distance information between meters, yards, and miles, please see "Switching Between Yards/Meters/Miles"
  3. If the other courses on your SkyCaddie show the correct yardage, there may be an issue with that particular course. Try sending down the Playlist again. If this does not fix the issue, please contact our technical support department so we may rectify the problem.
